October 2014

Babbé McCathie has appointed senior engineering technician Gary Bougourd as technical director of the company.

In a career spanning over 40 years, Gary has been involved in delivering engineering solutions to projects as varied as the Guernsey Post Headquarters in La Vrangue, Checkers Superstore, St Pierre Park Hotel, the iconic Le Rondin School development, the Dorey Centre at St James and Friquet Garden Centre.

He first cut his teeth as an engineering apprentice at Guernsey Steel and also worked for an electrical engineering firm and Guernsey Glass before joining engineering consultancy Muir Wilson  in 1979.

The company has since been through a number of name changes and mergers, most recently at the beginning of this year, but Gary has remained a constant – with the exception of a year out to work on the Royal Bank of Canada project.

Anybody who is anybody in construction in Guernsey knows Gary, either in person or by reputation, as a man who doesn’t waste words and who brings a wealth of engineering knowledge to each project. As well as his practical and problem solving skills, he is renowned for his attention to detail and personal service, qualities recognised with a Customer Service Award in 2013, an award he then matched when picking up the 2014 Customer Service Award for employees of a medium-sized business earlier this summer.

There are not many properties left on Guernsey that Gary has not been involved with at some point and, as a keen diver, fisherman and boating enthusiast, there aren’t too many areas of the coastline he hasn’t explored either!

Managing Director Don Babbé said Gary’s appointment to the board reflected the significant contribution he had made to the company over many years.

“Gary is held in high esteem by his colleagues and by the other engineers and construction professionals he has worked with and demonstrates not only a high level of technical knowledge but also the eye for detail and friendly, yet professional, approach that we and our clients value so highly,” he said.
