Residential: Private House
The house was developed as a fluid, three-dimensional plan, with the 15th Century barn forming the heart of the home, and we worked hand-in-hand with the Architect to design and detail a hybrid masonry, timber, and steel frame structure, making sensible use of existing elements where possible.
On the lower level, the kitchen and dining is positioned below a more formal living space occupying the mezzanine level. A more relaxed living/play space is set at the front of the house and this opens out on to a terrace.
At the rear, the sleeping block is linked to the main living space via a glazed entrance and, where possible, the interior structure of the barn has been retained and revealed.
This award-winning scheme involved the use of cutting edge floor decking and insulation systems. This, combined with the complex geometry and client’s fastidious attention to detail, made this project particularly demanding, but ultimately very rewarding.
